This Week in Cleveland Park Listserv

One of the best parts of our neighborhood is the small town atmosphere that the Cleveland Park Listserv helps to create. Each Friday we will pull out some (possibly out of context) gems from the Listserv to share with our neighbors and friends. We hope these outtakes of the neighborhood news will get you ready for another great weekend in Cleveland Park!

Ward 3 Problems…
I could walk to the grocery store with my cart but how often do any of us do that anymore? Two hundred fifty dollars and 8 bags later we would all prefer to be able to load that stuff into our car and drive it home.

Loud speakers with bad sound? Please don’t give to anyone in my building…
We are giving away a pair of big speakers purchased in 1984. They are in great physical condition given their age, but they don’t have premium sound. However, they still function well and can get very loud if you want.

Clearly, everyone should read the listserv
A young man representing Verizon rang our doorbell…I did not have the time to hear him out because I was preparing for a dinner guest…After I closed the door I couldn’t help but ask myself, how desperate could Verizon be that they have to send people door to door to sell their service. Maybe they should read this listserv once and a while and see how many subscribers complain about Verizon…

Verizon may not read the listserv, but apparently RCN employees do!
I just wanted to weigh in with my recent experience with RCN. They are fantastic! My new building has Comcast and RCN. After talking with both and reading reviews on Yelp, RCN was the clear winner and my experience with them from selection, to the set-up techs to their new DVR service is awesome!

The Linus of Cleveland Park?
I am in search of a missing baby blanket. It was lost last night between Cleveland Park and Van Ness, possibly on Metro. It is solid aqua on one side (plush) and multi-colored modern bird pattern on the other. It is a treasured blanket…

50% Off Pulpo Deal

Been meaning to check out Cleveland Park’s new-kid-on-the-block Pulpo? Then make sure to grab this 50% off Living Social deal. $25 gets you $50 to spend on Pulpo’s twist on classic tapas, such as  octopus sliders, braised baby short ribs, serrano mac & cheese (or Spanish beer and sangria if that’s more your thing). Our recommendations? Skip the pan con tomate (tomato bread) to save room for the seafood tapas. Check out the deal here.

Pulpo has some great happy hour specials too. Check them out (and all the other places to get tasty food and drink deals) in our day-by-day happy hour guide.

Take that!
I was just approached for the second time this summer by a guy in a car, this time at Woodley Road and Cathedral. He starts out, “Excuse me, my daughter’s out at Sibley Hospital…” I last encountered him two months ago near Two Amy’s, so he works our broad neighborhood. He tells a long story about his daughter at Sibley with a rare diagnosis … I’m ashamed to say that I gave him 20 bucks the first time. Fool me once, shame on you. This time I called him a jerk and he drove away.

Rocking optional…
We are selling a funky easy chair (that has rocking option) with a matching ottoman, all in a red velvet floral motif pattern, for $100. It’s in good shape

Not lasting long in this neighborhood…
Free Beer Equipment Is Gone. The beer making equipment has been taken. Thanks to all.

Watch Caddyshack…
I have a 3″ perfectly round hole in my yard that goes straight down about a foot and then turns. I don’t think its a mole because there is no displaced dirt at the entrance. Does anyone else have this kind of creature?

Care to estimate the trade off between being great for kids and young professionals bolting the other way…
I’d like to second that — Dino is a great place for kids. $1 per year of age is a great deal, there are plenty of options, and the staff is very relaxed and cool about having youngsters around.

A mattress does not a bed make…
Does anyone have a double mattress with or without bed they would like to unload?

Cleveland Park Mentions

What’s the world saying about Cleveland Park this week? Find out every Thursday in Cleveland Park Mentions…

From Washington Post…
Klingle Road trail is closer to reality but still years off
“A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the decision to formally close a portion of Klingle Road NW to traffic, ending the last serious bid to reopen a street connection across Rock Creek Park that has been severed since a 1990 sewer collapse.”

From Washington Examiner
THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Ketura Persellin
“Persellin, a Cleveland Park resident, holds a doctorate in English and started her career as a writer, but for the past several years she’s worked as an image consultant — essentially, running a D.C. version of “What Not to Wear.”"

From Urban Turf blog…
What $3,000 Rents You in DC
“Tucked away in Cleveland Park is the Archstone 2501 Porter, a luxury high-rise apartment building that offers high-end features like a concierge service, a dry-cleaner and an online rent payment option. “

New Cleveland Park Neighborhood Guide Released by Going Out Gurus

The Going Out Gurus of the Washington Post recently updated their neighborhood guides and included our beloved Cleveland Park. Their full list of recommended neighborhood attractions can be found here, and includes many of the Cleveland Park institutions, such as Dino, the Uptown Theater, Vace, Palena, and the Zoo. We like that the guide also included (literally) off-the-beaten-path favorite Melvin Hazen Trail and new(ish) additions Sugar Magnolia and Medium Rare. But did they miss some of the smaller establishments and attractions that make this place really feel like home? (Then again, do we want the masses all crowding in for $5 drinks at Nanny O’Brien’s on a Friday night?)

What do you think readers? Did the Post get it right? What’s your favorite Cleveland Park business that’s missing from the GOG guide?

Spotted in Cleveland Park: Scary News About 2012

There is no better sign that the world will actually end in 2012 than the proclamation of the Washington Times that it is the year’s official newspaper.

Pay $50 and advertise them on the listserv…
I am looking for suggestions for places to sell artwork from an office that closed. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Scary…maybe Council should ban coin-operated laundry machines…
There were several robberies and attempted break ins Saturday and Sunday nights on Macomb Street between 34th and Ross Place. One house was entered while residents were sleeping upstairs. The robbers only took cash and a credit card…A car key was taken from one house and used to enter the car to steal a roll of quarters. A key was left in the driveway.

If you lose your cuckoo, the listserv will help you find it…
The cuckoo in our cuckoo clock suddenly does not want to come out anymore. Does anyone know of a skillful clock repair person who could take a look at it?

Our condolences…
I’m looking for some affordable recommendations to move a few large pieces of furniture from Cleveland Park to Van Ness at the end of August.

Yard crashers…
We have a mid-century modern home of brick and vinyl siding. The
siding (and foundation plantings) must go and we’re looking for alternatives that will help modernize the appearance of the house.

New party spot…
Regarding the grassy area behind the Uptown theater and what can be done to maintain it…There is so much broken glass back there, especially directly behind the Uptown Theater and, more recently, in one of the parking spots from a car window that obviously shattered.

What’s so special about Cleveland Park?

Over at the popular forum DC Urban Mom, someone asks, “What’s so special about Cleveland Park?”

We are looking to buy a house and noticing that Cleveland Park is much more expensive than other Upper NW DC areas. Is it worth it?

Some of the responses include…

I think it’s got the potential to be somewhat walkable and convenient to metro which are important to some people.

For vanity…

It’s a ‘rubbing elbows’ thing. In true, historic district Cleveland Park, you’ve got a lot of VIPs there. Like, David Brooks just moved from close-in Maryland to a Victorian in Cleveland Park. However beware, because there is much real estate in 20008 calling itself “Cleveland Park.” Real estate agents would have you believe that everything up to practically Nebraska Ave. is “North Cleveland Park,” and while there’s nothing wrong with all those standard DC-issue red brick Colonials, you shouldn’t pay a premium for them as you would a 1890 beaut on Newark.

For beauty…

It has gorgeous, character filled properties, a great location, and cachet. It is not more expensive then the other “best ‘hoods though, like Wesley Heights, Spring Valley, Kent, Town of Chevy Chase (MD), etc… and its a bit less then Georgetown.

Since it’s the “least boring”…

The area near Connecticut Ave. is less isolated than most of UpperNW, and there are some fine homes within the historic district. I suppose it’s the least boring part of UpperNW, though it’s still fairly dull.

For walking…

If you want a neighborhood for walking, Cleveland Park could work, as could Georgetown, AU Park (if you have kids), Capitol Hill, Logan Circle. Bang for buck I’d check out Columbia Heights, $1m can go quite far there.

What’s your belief?

Cleveland Park Mentions

What’s the world saying about Cleveland Park this week? Find out every Thursday in Cleveland Park Mentions…

From the Washington Post
Cafe Sorriso e Gelateria
“Diners familiar with Sorriso in Cleveland Park won’t be surprised that the neighborhood restaurant’s cozy Woodley Park spinoff is a family effort.”

From Curbed blog…
Romney Plays Texas Hold ‘Em With Real Estate; Urban Alarm
“CLEVELAND PARK—A security company called Urban Alarm wrote us to say they’re expanding their DC presence. Already they have seen a 40% drop in crime in the neighborhood they patrol near Cleveland Park (officially called: Woodland-Normanstone). Click through for the press release about what services they provide.”

From Washington Life
Interior Design: 7 Questions with Christopher Patrick
“Ever since, Patrick’s star has been rising, which was made only more noticeable with his redesign of a tiny bathroom in this year’s D.C. Design House. Most recently, he completed a project in the Cleveland Park neighborhood for a busy professional who frequently entertains.”

From Ghosts of DC blog…
Three Big Movies at the Uptown Theater
“And of course, since it’s a movie theater with great history, we’ll dig up some of the bigger movies that have played at the favorite Cleveland Park movie house.”
