From The Washington Post Reliable Source blog…
Surreal estate: David Brooks moves from Bethesda to Cleveland Park
“The New York Times op-ed columnist and wife Sarah are trading up — from their longtime home near Bethesda’s Burning Tree Club to a century-old (exquisitely renovated) five bedroom, four-and-a-half bath house in Cleveland Park…”
From WTOP…
Mike’s Take: Hobnobbing with D.C.’s elite
“For example, people from Des Moines or Seattle may ask how often you dine at the White House? Or ask about the whirlwind of parties in Georgetown and Cleveland Park … when in fact an evening at Five Guys is what you call a night out…”
From Salon…
David Brooks, “structuralist”
“Hey, let’s check out some recent real estate news at the Washington Post’s Reliable Source blog, for fun. Looks like a Mr. David Brooks just bought himself a $3.95 million home in Cleveland Park! Whoops, sorry about your welfare state collapsing, 12 million out of work Americans, but it was just too “unsustainable” to keep you employed — you should all consider developing new skills and trying to find more “productive” work, like writing bulls*** columns for the New York Times, maybe.”
From Ghosts of DC blog…
Senator John Stennis Mugged and Shot in Front of Cleveland Park Home
“That’s right, the Senator from Mississippi and chairman of the Armed Services Committee was shot both in the chest and the leg, after he was mugged in front of his North Cleveland Park house (3609 Cumberland St. NW). He was returning home in the evening after work on January 30th, 1973.”
Cleveland Park Fire Station to Seek LEED Silver Certification
Somewhat lost in the mess the Cleveland Park fire station renovations is the fact that the city is hoping to get the building LEED Silver certified. Of course, much of the discussion has centered on the widening of the front doors and the historical preservation issues surrounding that change. With that behind us, though, we can focus on some of the upgrades that will occur at the site. This includes all new windows and doors, in addition to a new roof. Obviously, this will mark a significant improvement on the “greenness” of the building. The city hopes that these improvements will allow it to earn a “silver” certification under the LEED standard. The rating of silver is granted to buildings scoring between 50-59 points on the LEED scale. Buildings are rated in five categories Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality with additional points for innovation in design and regional priority.

Atomic Billiards Seeks Later Hours
On May 9, Atomic Billiards will go before the Alcohol Beverage Control Board seeking an extension of its hours. The new hours would give the establishment an opening time of 8 AM. On weekends (Friday and Saturday), sales and consumption of alcohol would extend until 3 AM. On weeknights (Sunday-Thursday), sales and consumption of alcohol would extend until 2 AM.
Atomic Billiards has faced increasing competition in the neighborhood recently with the opening of the Underground below St. Arnold’s. Even with the competition, it remains uniquely positioned with its myriad recreational opportunities on site including billiards, shuffleboard, darts, and board games. Atomic has no outstanding fines or investigative matters before the board, so it will likely be granted its request.

Great news bibliophiles! This weekend will be the spring book sale at the Cleveland Park Library. The sale will take place on May 5 from noon to 4 PM. This sale will feature 1000s of books from myriad genres. I can guarantee that you will find something to enjoy this summer – a great way to stock up for the joys of summer reading. Friday Five: Best Outdoor Patios
With summertime and warm weather growing near, we’ve gotten really excited about outdoor patio season at our favorite neighborhood restaurants. Here’s to hoping the rain stays away this weekend, so that we can all get a head start on enjoying a nice outdoor burger and brew. This week’s Friday Five includes 4 patios we love (and one new patio we can’t wait to try):
1. Cleveland Park Bar & Grill – Definitely our favorite rooftop bar in the ‘hood. Great place to sip their happy hour specials.
2. Medium Rare – Medium Rare has a large patio that’s not in the middle of the sidewalk, unlike so many Cleveland Park eateries.
3. Siam House – The patio is small and a always a little packed (like the restaurant), but we love Siam House patio for a quick, inexpensive, tasty dinner or lunch.
4. St. Arnold’s – Who needs a patio when your whole restaurant becomes outdoor space?
5. District Kitchen – So we haven’t had a chance to check out District Kitchen’s new patio yet, since the restaurant just opened this winter, but we like what we see. Large patio in a great location for watching Woodley Park happenings and families trekking to the zoo. We hear good things about their sustainable wines and signature cocktails–can’t wait to try one outdoors this summer!
Any great patios we’re missing? Where are you excited to dine al fresco this summer?
This Week in Cleveland Park Listserv
One of the best parts of our neighborhood is the small town atmosphere that the Cleveland Park Listserv helps to create. Each Friday we will pull out some (possibly out of context) gems from the Listserv to share with our neighbors and friends. We hope these outtakes of the neighborhood news will get you ready for another great weekend in Cleveland Park!
Place in package box. Tape. Will go fast…
Free stuff on porch. For first taker…
Angry birds? Pigs stole eggs?
I am new the area and just moved onto Macomb Street and tonight around 1:30 AM, I heard a really weird animal noise, it sounds like half hooting and half howling. I’m thinking a bird maybe? The sound seemed to get louder and then die down, and then start up again. It probably went on for a good 20 minutes and now it seems like they are farther away and its really faint.
Here’s one that easily slipped by the listserv censors…Buy a couch AND help the listserv…
Massive leather sofa with CP history. I bought this huge leather sofa from a nice Cleveland Park neighbor 18 months ago for $50 and now am ready to pass it along because I am moving into a smaller space. Approx 90″ x 36″ deep and back height 28″. Available to you for a $25 donation to the CP listserv (they take PayPal).
Important PSA…
We got this message from our National Cathedral school this morning and I was wondering if anyone has any more information to add: “It has come to our attention that a few students at a nearby school have been approached by strangers. With that in mind, if at any time you do not feel safe in an area or you feel uncomfortable with someone who has approached you, find the nearest Cathedral police officer, staff, or faculty member.”
Another installment in our networking knows no bounds in DC segment…
I am a young urban planning professional seeking career advice! I was wondering if anyone had contacts in the urban planning professional world who would be willing to talk to a young professional interested in furthering her career in the planning field.
Lessons in malinvestment…
My 11 year old niece is considering lacrosse. Before investing a lot in equipment she may not use, I’m wondering if anyone has a girl’s stick they no longer need that could use a new home.
Shoe cubbies – good for inspiring kindergarten nostalgia…
Giveaway — please take today! White melamine shoe cubby and a shelf unit in same finish. The shoe cubby is 24.5 inches wide, 32 inches tall and 12 inch deep; the shelf unit is also 32 tall and 12 wide by 12 deep and has one shelf. The shoe cubby holds 24 pairs of shoes. It’s in good condition.

From The Washington Post
The joy of innovation
“In the case of Blind Dog Cafe, Karesh said “necessity was the mother of invention” as the paucity of coffee shops in Shaw inspired him to open his own. He roped in Singer, whom he grew up with in Chevy Chase, and Gilchrist, a line cook at Ardeo + Bardeo in Cleveland Park.”
From Fox 5 DC
Cleveland Park businesses embracing ‘Bethesdafication’
“Bethesdafication. In a quick Google search, the word seems to have first popped up when downtown Silver Spring was being revitalized. Some residents say they didn’t want to be “Bethesda-fied.” … Now – that term Bethesdafication is being tossed around in D.C. at 2Amy’s, the popular pizza spot off Wisconsin Avenue.”
From Eater blog
Tackle Box Cleveland Park Will Become Tapas Bar Pulpo
“The rumors over the fate of Tackle Box in Cleveland Park have been swirling for awhile now and just last week Cleveland Parker speculated that Floriana owner Dino Tapper would be taking over the space. Well, indeed, Washington Post critic Tom Sietsema tweeted this afternoon and an Eater source confirms that Tapper does plan to take over the space and open a tapas bar named Pulpo.”
From The Washington Times
Cover story: Financing for condos, co-ops different
“When Heidi Krieger, who recently purchased a one-bedroom co-op in Cleveland Park, first started looking at co-ops and condos, her first concern was to find a home she loved. Her second priority was to make sure the monthly fees were affordable.”
Free Wine Tastings in Cleveland Park This Weekend
It’s no secret that we at Cleveland Parker love finding great wine in the neighborhood. Especially when it’s free. So before you head out this Friday or Saturday night, we wanted to pass along a couple free tastings scheduled for this weekend at Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits:
1. May 4th from 5-8 pm, Tasting from JAQK Cellars
Come to taste seven wines from this new California winery, JAQK Cellars, including their “High Roller” Cabernet Sauvignon and “Charmed” Sauvignon Blanc. Sweets from Firehook will also be on hand at this event. The store promises “deep discounts” on the wines, though we’re not sure what those are yet. An RSVP is requested for this event at anthony.quinn@clevelandparkwines.com.
2. May 5th from 2-6 pm, Tasting of Wines from Argentina and Spain
Saturday afternoon, Cleveland Park Wine and Spirits will also be offering a free tasting, though this one appears to be more low-key than Friday evening’s event. The store promises a little education on wines from Argentina and Spain as you sip.
For these and all other events in the neighborhood, be sure to check out our Events Calendar.
