Palena’s Frank Ruta up for James Beard Award

Good news for Palena’s chef and co-owner Frank Ruta who was recently one of twenty chefs nationally (and the only in DC) nominated for outstanding chef by the James Beard Foundation. Ruta who got his start in the Carter White House, has been with Palena since its opening in 2000. After Palena opened, accolades came quickly for Ruta as he received the Best Chef honor from Food and Wine in 2001. In 2007, Ruta won the James Beard Best Chef Mid-Atlantic award. Since the restaurant’s expansion into the old Magruder’s space it has received renewed recognition.

Other Cleveland Park highlights include Ardeo + Bardeo owner Ashok Bajaj, nominated for outstanding restaurateur.

Check out all James Beard nominees for 2012.

What’s your opinion on Palena Market?

With the recent announcement that Ripple will soon be opening it’s “mystery bakery,” we started wondering: what do Cleveland Park residents think about all of these new front-of-the-restaurant bakeries? Like Palena Market, it seems that Ripple will use its small space just south of the entrance to create a store that will be open during the day. While Ripple claims that the bakery will feature one special item, they also mention that the store will sell seasonal fruit, bread, and sandwiches. Is this a more coherent selection than Palena Market’s random assortment of items (some of which appear to be items used in menu items in the restaurant)? We’ve tried the Palena Market baguette (good but overpriced) and coffee (not-so-good and overpriced) and wonder if  the store would do better with a more focused selection of items.

So what do you think readers? Are these stores a good fit for the neighborhood? Or a good use of space that would otherwise be closed during the day? Any big fans of Palena Market out there? Excited for Ripple’s bakery?

“Incredibly obvious and simple” doesn’t match any characterization of DC driver intelligence…
Disabled traffic lights are to be treated as a 4-way stop. This should be incredibly obvious and simple for all drivers to deal with, so no further action should be necessary.

I have a flat tire on my Toyota Corolla and would appreciate recommendations for a good place to buy a replacement tire. Isn’t there some place that delivers? Thanks for your help.

Cleveland Park/Van Ness Date Night: French Films and Dinner Deals

Have a date on Friday night, but no plans? Here’s our suggestion for Friday night festivities in  the area that won’t break the bank.

Start off your evening with a little French culture. The Hillwood Estate is showing the Best Short French Films of 2011 as part of a weeklong celebration by Alliance Francaise de Washington. Tickets are $8 (you can purchase them here) and allow you to view “ a selection of the best French short films of 2011 as determined by a jury of French film professionals (similar to the American Academy Awards).” The show starts at 6:30 pm and lasts for one hour, but if you arrive early, you can check out the mansion and special exhibits starting at 5:30 pm.

After the show, head across Connecticut to Acacia Bistro. Recently named one of the top 100 restaurants by Washingtonian, Acacia Bistro features Italian cuisine and an impressive wine list. We recommend the small plates, though the menu also offers larger entrees. For a discount on dinner, download the ScoutMob app on your phone. There you will find a free deal for 50% off your dinner or drink bill (up to $15 max discount).

Cleveland Park Mentions

What’s the world saying about Cleveland Park this week? Find out every Thursday in Cleveland Park Mentions…

From a food blog in Atlanta, GA…
A Weekend in Washington
“In hindsight, choosing to start off our weekend in Palena’s formal dining room, as opposed to its more casual cafe, was probably a stuffy choice for two beer-loving dudes who haven’t seen each other in a while.”

From the Huffington Post’s Rachel Tepper…
Blind Dog Cafe Opens Inside Darnell’s Bar Near Howard University
“The cafe’s menu comes courtesy of chef Cullen Gilchrist, who also works as a line cook at upscale Cleveland Park eatery Ardeo+Bardeo. There’s a small but rich selection of sandwiches to choose from, made with bread from Panorama Baking Co. in Alexandria, hand-poured coffee brewed with beans from PT’s Coffee Roasting Co. and organic fair trade teas from Rishi.”

From the Examiner…
Sightings: Palin stops by salon, Clinton dines at Ardeo+Bardeo
“Then on Monday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton chose Cleveland Park’s Ardeo+Bardeo for dinner. The former first lady was spotted having dinner with a friend around 7:15 p.m. In classic Clinton fashion, she was sporting a dark pantsuit.”

From Washingtonian’s Best Bites Blog…
Ripple’s Mystery Bakery Will Open in March
“What will be the main item on offer at the wee Cleveland Park shop? Hint: It won’t be cupcakes.”

Valentine’s Day Ideas for the Individualist

Not tied down this Valentine’s Day? Here’s our February 14th guide for the solo Cleveland Park-er.

1.  Strengthen and meditate. Today (and every Tuesday!) is Free Yoga Night at the Cleveland Park Library. Enjoy some mid-week tranquility and practice your asanas all without leaving the neighborhood.

2. Test your random knowledge. Head over to Nanny O’Briens for trivia night. Despite the start time stated on the bar’s website, we hear it usually starts around 8 pm. Arrive a few minutes early to take advantage of the bar’s happy hour specials and meet some new friends to form your team for the 10 rounds of questions.

3.  Watch some NCAA basketball. Head to Cleveland Park Bar and Grill for the Florida v. Alabama game at 7:00 pm. Bama won’t be the only team without key players–two key Florida reserves will miss this game. Plus, Bama is a tough place to win. Get to the bar a bit before the game, and you can enjoy $3 beer and $4 liquor and wine until 7 pm.

4.  Treat yourself! Use the night as good excuse to indulge in an old favorite food or experiment with that new recipe you’ve been meaning to try. Not sure what to make? I like the blog Practical Cooking for One and the Washington Post’s Cooking for One column.

5.  Take advantage of a deal. Relax and enjoy a drink solo, or mingle with other singles at one of the 9 Cleveland Park bars featuring happy hour specials today.
